There are offroad trucks and then there are offroad racing trucks. There are offroad racing trucks and then there is the Ram 1500 TRX. Powered by a supercharged 6.2-liter V8, the 1500 TRX pumps out 702 horsepower, hits 60 mph in 4.5 seconds, and comes with factory Bilstein® Black Hawk® shocks and 11.8 inches of ground clearance. The 1500 TRX is a truck like no other, yet it’s still a 1500, so with all of that blistering performance, you still get the best and most comfortable truck interior on the market, loaded with impressive tech to improve both performance and your enjoyment of it. With its big offroad tires, wide stance, and giant LED-illuminated hood scoop, there is no mistaking the 1500 TRX for anything else, and that’s doubly true when you fire up the engine. The exhaust note that comes through the dual black-tipped tailpipes will be a nice auditory and visual treat for all of those who won’t be able to keep up with your truck.
While there are quite a few differences between the TRX and the standard 1500, the biggest one is the engine. The 6.2-liter supercharged V8 has seen service in Hellcat-badged vehicles, and its rumbling exhaust note is a familiar sound at drag strips everywhere. But with the TRX, it sees offroad duty, and it makes for equally incredible performance in the dirt. In fact, the 702 horsepower and 650 lb-ft of torque is enough to propel the 1500 TRX to 60 mph in just 4.5 seconds, and the giant 15-inch brake rotors are there to bring you to a stop with the same kind of unbelievable quickness. The 1500 TRX comes quipped with a Bilstein® Black Hawk® e2 Shock System that gives it 13 inches of front suspension travel, and 14 inches of rear suspension travel. This comes thanks to the system’s remote reservoirs, and there is a lot of underbody protection to keep it all in place. The big offroad tires provide excellent traction too, in part because the TRX is a full 8 inches wider than the standard 1500.
You don’t tend to think of offroad vehicles as the place to find a luxury interior, and that’s reasonable most of the time. But the 1500 is already known for its surprisingly well-made interior, and the TRX offers a version of this interior with a ton of bells and whistles. The black and red interior features incredibly comfortable seats, and an available dual-pane panoramic sunroof provides natural light. There are carbon fiber accents all over, and you can get red contrast stitching to go with it. The dash houses a standard 12-inch touchscreen running Uconnect® 5 with navigation. To go with this, there is an available 19-speaker Harman Kardon® Premium Audio System to make whatever you listen to sound amazing, although it would be understandable if you prefer the sound of the engine. There is a flat-bottom leather-wrapped steering wheel, with paddle shifters minted behind it. But if you prefer, there is also a center console-mounted shifter with a manual mode.
It takes some serious tech wizardry to get this kind of power out of an engine that will fit in a pickup truck, but it takes even more to make it usable, and the technology needed to make the 1500 TRX feel refined and easy to control on the road is positively cutting edge. The 1500 TRX comes with eight different drive modes, to help you make sure that you’re always getting the best possible performance out of the copious power on tap. An available head-up display helps you keep your eyes on the road (or trail), while an available digital rearview mirror lets you keep an eye on what’s behind you, not that anyone back there will be able to catch you. A suite of available driver aids make on-road driving easier, and parking as well, thanks to the available 360° Surround View Camera.
