There is no more iconic off-road vehicle than the Jeep Wrangler. It is undoubtedly the vehicle you think of when you imagine going off-road and this is with very good reason. Unlike nearly every other SUV on the planet, the Wrangler was built with going off-road as its primary function rather than an afterthought for a grocery-getter. Originally conceived as a military vehicle, the Wrangler still wears styling that evokes this heritage and it remains as functional as ever. Three different engines are offered (and a plug-in hybrid drivetrain that is reviewed separately) including a 6.4-liter V8 that gives the Wrangler some serious performance capability. The Wrangler also comes with a huge variety of configuration options, letting you dial in exactly the sort of vehicle you need for whatever sort of adventure you’re looking to go on.
While mostly minor in nature, there are still a variety of key updates to the iconic Jeep Wrangler for the 2025 model year. This year, the 6-speed manual transmission is available exclusively with the V6 engine and vice versa. Conversely, the 2.0-liter turbo-4 is now paired only with the automatic transmission. Power windows and power door locks are now standard on all grades of the Wrangler as well. A new olive green ‘41 exterior color debuts for 2025 as well while the Wrangler Rubicon 392 Final Edition remains available as a farewell to V8-powered Wrangler models.
Powering the off-road adventures of the Jeep Wrangler is a choice of three different engines. Standard on most trims is the 3.6-liter V6 which produces 285 horsepower and 260 lb-ft of torque, more than enough to get you over rocks and unstuck from the mud. Available on most trims and standard on the Sahara trim is a 2.0-liter turbocharged engine that produces 270 horsepower and 295 lb-ft of torque. This obviously isn’t too different from the V6, but the 2.0-liter engine offers better fuel economy to go with that power. Last up is the 6.4L V8 SRT® HEMI® engine that is only available on the Rubicon 392 Final Edition where it comes standard. This produces 470 horsepower and 470 lb-ft of torque. Whichever engine you choose, power will be sent through a choice of four different 4WD systems, two of them part-time and two of them full-time. While an 8-speed automatic transmission is available, the Wrangler is one of the few new vehicles being sold today that can be outfitted with a manual transmission.
The success of the Jeep Wrangler over the years comes from mixing proven off-road elements that have stood the test of time and the latest in cutting-edge technology that gives the Wrangler an edge over less-evolved off-road machines. Some of this tech is present to help with off-road duties, like the available Command-Trac®, Rock-Trac®, or Selec-Trac® 4WD systems, the Tru-Lok® axles, or the Integrated Off-Road Camera. The navigation system comes loaded with trail maps and more can be downloaded which can help to keep you from getting lost, a valuable tool to have. Then there’s tech to make the experience more enjoyable like heated seats and the impressive available Alpine® Premium Audio System which boasts 9 speakers and 552-watt output. To control this stereo, the Wrangler comes with the advanced and user-friendly Uconnect® 5 system running on a large 12.3-inch touchscreen that is standard for the entire lineup.
Every off-road adventure is different and a major strength of any serious off-roader is the ability to customize it to whatever you need for your specific type of off-roading. There are six different trims with a choice of 2-door or 4-door body styles for most of them. There are three engines (as well as a plug-in hybrid drivetrain), two transmissions, four 4WD systems, and eight roof configurations. Optional equipment gives you even more choices including wheel, tire, and suspension changes as well as various body components. Additional equipment is available through Mopar, all of which is officially endorsed by Jeep and guaranteed to be compatible with your Wrangler. The catalog of this equipment is immense and the ways you can further equip your Wrangler far exceed any other vehicle on the market.
