Recent advancements in automotive technology haven’t just given us better stereos and greatly improved fuel economy. Traction control systems have also improved a lot, as anyone who has driven in a snowstorm in recent years will testify to. And as great as these systems are for mainstream on-road vehicles, they have a whole different dimension when it comes to Jeep, thanks in part to the Selec-Terrain Traction Management System.
Jeep has produced legendary offroad vehicles since long before electronic traction control systems existed, and the hardware that made those vehicles so great offroad is still found on new Jeep vehicles. But new technology has improved how these systems work, and how they react to different types of terrain. The Selec-Terrain Traction Management System allows you to select different modes to “tell” the system what kind of conditions you’re experiencing so that it can adjust to anticipate those conditions before you start losing traction.
Operating the Selec-Terrain system is incredibly easy, you just use the selector to choose one of the specialized modes, Auto, Snow, Sand, Sport or ECO. From there, the system will communicate to the following systems (which specific systems apply depends on your vehicle and/or equipment) what prevailing conditions are like:
